So my friend's cd-drive (and WinXP-installation) is busted and I'm googling for the ubuntu-install from usb-stick solution. The solutions I'm seing seems to work IF I already have a linux-dist running.

Is there a way to prepare the USB-stick from WinXP? Considering that 8.10 went live today it would be a blast to let him have that.

Oscar,

Grab a copy of the Windows version if UNetbootin to do that for you. It creates a great menu for booting and/or installing the OS.

UNetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/)

There is mention of better USB install support in the release notes for 8.10, but in the meantime this is the easiest option for getting it working under Windows. \\:D/
