Lol. In order to solve some of my problems (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=948674) since taking to dive into Ubuntu, I just downloaded the alternate version of Ubuntu 8.10.
Installation was done on a clear hard drive (see specs in my signature), everything was fine and I got to boot to Ubuntu where it told me that new updates were available and I could improve my experience by enabling the proprietary graphic drivers. I chose only to update (~27MB) and rebooted.
I was then welcomed by this error message right away:
Starting up...
PANIC: early exception 0e rip 10:ffffffff8022d601 error 0 cr2 ffffffffff5fc0f0
... and I downloaded the alternate in the hope of finally having a smooth Ubuntu install... yeah, right. :(
