When can we download standard ubuntu8.10?
the exct time ---- I am in China

October 30th, 2008, 04:46 AM
as far as am concerned that ubuntu update their OS every 6 months, giving that the 8.04 was released in April, 8.10 should've been released on October.

there is no official announcement yet but I am absolutely sure I will be out before 2009 !

No exact time so far since we have different time lines. For sure, they are to follow single time line for the release download. While waiting, you could try their Release Candidate.

i'm on the eastern coast (well not quite) of canada (but technically eastern coast of us) - and going to ubuntu.com it's no longer counting down - just saying "coming soon" - previously the count down ended today (10/30/08)... so either today or tomorrow... likely "tomorrow" for you if you're in china...

It will probably go up based on US-Pacific, it is seldom that the Eastern Hemisphere gets some love when it comes to timezones :p

We just have to get used to it ;) In any case, East Asia-ASEAN-Oceania is on the road to becoming the gold mine this millennium, so just a little bit patience :P

I'm from Asean-Philippines btw. Waiting myself.

What is the procedure for those of us that have installed 8.10RC? Do I have to update whole distribution (sudo update-manager -d) or what?

fikelfikel

It should be out today. I'm having trouble upgrading in Ireland, but later, I should be able to.

If you have all the updates then you do not need to upgrade.

I like our friend in china, I would like to know when the downloads become avalable. I have a desktop and laptop sitting ready to go.

I just need to download the ISO and get to work.

I'm in England so time zones are something other people have to deal with. As such I'm not realy any good at them, they are all a little baffling.

Since there are quite good reviews on the RC version then i think you can download the latest as soon as tomorrow or day after.

You can just run updates since you have the alpha version.

If you updated the RC on the 28th October, you probably already have it (in all but name) as there were no upgrades yesterday (29th, at least for me in the UK).

IIRC, Ubuntu usually releases this sort of stuff at 1200 UTC, which is 0800 EDT, and 2000 in China. http://www.worldtimeserver.com for your UTC offset.

I too am waiting to download and seed the torrents for all six Ubuntu install CDs. I am waiting with baited breath, on the tip of my computer chair, drooling on the keyboard. I have a cooler full of diet soda on one side, and pizza delivery phone numbers on the other. I have turned off all the lights, unplugged the phone, pulled all the windowshades, and greased my DSL modem. I am ready. Bring it on. :)

It was officially announced months ago:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseSchedule

I think when a date is given for open source releases, the release actually happens in the last minute of that day on the latest timezone, whereas what people expect is to be able to download it that day, regardless of timezone.
This is assuming it's actually released today and that there are no last minute problems.

I'm bored waiting, I have had this day planed for a week or so. The anticipation...

As I'm bored I thought I would share my plan... I use two pooters, a laptop and a desktop. Both are at home, the laptop never leaves the house and is just used to surf the web. Saves arguments with the missus about me never talking to her, cos I'm sat in the front room. Not a perfect solution but one that works for us...

The Desktop machine is primarily for gaming. As such it's running windows. (Don't shout at me! I have my reasons)

The two hard drives were in a RAID stripping for speed but I have turned the RAID off to get two separate drives back. I have installed Vista x64 on hda. I intend to install 8.10 on hdb, I would like to do it as a clean install.

So this is why I'm sat at my desktop typing this, bored...

The last minute of Thursday in the latest timezone is 1159 UTC Friday.

I can't believe I too am sitting here excited about the new release like a child before Christmas!

While you're waiting, get yourself ReloadEvery addon for Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/115) and get the computer to do the polling, then just sit back with a coffee and a good magazine!

This isn't that unusual for me. Games often are like this. There is a demo or patch. Your sat at your pooter waiting for “the new hotness" whatever it is.

The last one was acouple of days ago waiting for Call of Duty World at War, Multiplayer demo. Chat going back and forth about stuff.

You seem to be forgetting that they have to have their morning coffee when they finally arise from their crypt's, then they have to upload it to a bunch of servers, then update the site... Or of course they've just gone to work, in which case we might as well do something else for now.

For Hardy (8.04) I found it wasn't available on the servers until about 11am EST or 16:00 UTC.

I don't think there's a precise launch time. It's whenever the people who update the servers get it done. It's all run by people.

I recommend using a mirror, though. The main site slows down a lot and even when the upgrade files are available you may not even be able to find out because you can't get a response.

Which of the different versions do y'all think are "more important" to seed -- desktop and server, but not alternate? 386, but not amd64? Discuss.

Kompare says that the torrent file on that page for desktop386 is identical to the one that I grabbed from here: http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/CDs-Ubuntu/8.10/ -- I would assume the rest are the same too.

Not surprising.
