Or are they too closely intertwined? Should a power user be concerned?

Canonical is going nowhere. But if it did get into trouble (big if), Ubuntu would still go on. It might suffer a little, but we'll be fine.

There's nothing to worry about.

Great news, Mark Shuttleworth already made plans for if this were to happen! And it's not just if Canonical fails... Canonical may at some point in time decide it doesn't even want to work on Ubuntu anymore! When Mark created Ubuntu he ALSO created the "Ubuntu Foundation" and initialized it with $10 million. The purpose of the Foundation is to do the exact same thing that Canonical is doing right now if Canonical were to ever pull out of Ubuntu or it went belly up. Right now the foundation is dormant and the money is just gaining interest, but it's there in case something happens.

Ubuntu is based on Debian (GNU/Linux). Debian has been around for a long time.

Debian doesn't have a company like Canonical backing it up -- it's all community based. However, if Canonical were to withdraw as sponsors, I assume that Ubuntu will stay, however there would no longer be a Main, Restricted, Universe, and Multiverse repository. Rather, it would become more like Debian and just have a 'main' and 'nonfree' repository, and become purely community based.

But something like this doesn't look very near :)
