On my first try I got 71 words per minute. That wasn't a great surprise to me, I figured that was about what I would get. One thing I would like to know, though is this: does it count a word as a 5 character string or a word as we normally think of it?

Eisenwinter
October 29th, 2008, 11:51 PM
@aeiah

Yeah, that makes it harder, because you have to read and write the word at the same time.

On my second attempt. I thought I'd be slower since I don't touch type. I'd be interested to see what the Dvorak users get on this compared to the Qwerty users...

@aeiah

Yeah, that makes it harder, because you have to read and write the word at the same time.

yea, it tests copying speed, although i suppose there isnt really a way around that. they use the words they do because they're the most common english ones though, which i suppose is slightly more useful than 'the quick brown fox' or something.

my typing used to be shitfast when i talked a lot on IM but ive grown antisocial in my age.

56 words per minute which, strangely enough, is exactly how fast I was on an old IBM typewriter back in high school. (they didn't have computers in most high schools back then...)

I'm quite a bit faster when I'm in the groove and the code is flowing though.

You type 542 characters per minute
You have 92 correct words and

92 words

Would have done better, but the fact that it isn't actual sentences kinda screwed me up.

INTERESTINGLY, I usually typed a wrong word, not a misspelling. So the word "something" would pop up, and I'd type "sometimes".

It isn't a fair test IMHO. I did a module of basic touch typing when I went to college. It got you another diploma for nothing basically. Anyway, I digress, Basically a proper typing exam, where you are tested on words per minute and accuracy, the exam text will be grammatically correct, with proper punctuation and use of capital letters. That way the person taking the test can pre read each sentence and touch type the sentence from memory.

Indeed, that was how we got tested on our skills in high school.

And any mistake got you penalties.

made some mistakes too, had to backspace a lot

That messed me up, too. I don't think in letters, I think in words. So I sort of "see" the path my fingers have to take to type everything, and I go for that. So when I make a typo, my brain throws "backspace" at the END of the pattern most of the time.

Example: when I was typing the above, I wrote "dhink" instead of "think". I knew I hit a 'd' immediately, but my fingers were already whipping out the rest of the word before I started hitting backspace, making me type it out twice instead of hitting the d, erasing it, and then starting again.

Yeah, I know, way too complex a post for something like this, but hey. I like to overanalyze. :lolflag:

Sounds like a nice little project to code, I shall start working on something like this right away.

If it ever gets done, I'll put it up here, so you can test yourself against that.

It would be interesting to make one of these that pulls random passages from an ebook site (Gutenberg project, maybe?) for more normal text. Predicting is what it's all about, and that doesn't work very well with a site like this.

78, 2 errors.

What would be more interesting would be to find out what gender everyone is. I tried to compete with my mom once... She was like "Well, that's pretty good for a guy.."

To answer the thread, I was something like 75-80 and she was 90-100. It was a while ago so I don't remember exactly how fast we were, but I spend a lot more time on a computer than she does. Plus, I do a lot of CLI work which is all typing, so in theory I should have been faster :)

You type 498 characters per minute
You have 3 correct words and
you have 90 wrong words This test isn't a good one, frankly. At first, I typed a lot more slowly than I normally do, as it was disorienting typing random words (not in a coherent sentence) not my own, with the letters changing color as I typed them. After a while, though, I adjusted and ended up typing faster than I normally do. I don't think I typed 90 wrong words, though... I guess if I use the Backspace to correct a word, they count it as wrong...

i didn't take the test, i don't have the stamina for that kind of stuff. i can type 3 or 4 words really fast! however, it must take a lot out of me because my typing speed very quickly goes down hill, i don't know why  (i've been typing this post for a few hours now lol)

i can't be the only one whose performance gets worse with time??

the best typing test is the one which can't be cheated - you compete one-on-one - the fastest typer is the winner!!

here's the link for that typing game, you log in as a guest than start. -

i found this old post while looking for the link above, not much has changed in recent years lol

I tried that site, and it's flawed. It says I'm only getting 49 WPM and always getting last place (I have 49 WPM, but he has 22? I know it's flawed as far as not detecting correct speeds, but common, even I can do basic arithmetic.)

and, if i had to use caps or punctuation i would have done much much worse.

meh 41, and 40 on my first and second tries...

seems about as fast as I ever was... I find when it's not a sentence I pause more between words.

hard for me to absorb the sentence since it makes no sense..

Oh well.
