Well, its almost midday here in New Zealand on the 30th of October, the big day for the latest incarnation of Ubuntu, the Intrepid Ibex!

Anyone waiting anxiously for the official release can come and talk here, just to pass the time until the time comes when we can all start downloading (preferably the torrent).

So come on, lets make this a release to remember!

I'm really really waiting for it, It is 29 minutes here into the release day and things are moving slow, it seems. I have waited actually for the release since... 10 hours ago, when the first timezones started to move to 30.10.

talsemgeest
October 29th, 2008, 11:32 PM
Well it's been 11 and 1/2 hours since we moved into the 30th here.

Back with hardy we got the release a day late...

havent you got anything better to do? canonical is based in london. although its possible that they'll release it at midnight tonight gmt (in about 90 minutes time), although they'll probably just wait until the morning or sneak it out in the early hours when all is quiet.

When it goes up, it should be here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/

Right now though it only shows the release candidate.

I still don't understand why they don't put that link on the primary download page (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/7390/).
Just about every other distro does it, and for good reason.

I wish they had a set time it would come out.

i havent been a Ubuntu/Linux user for much time...

ive used it from time to time but i get rid of it cuz i never have wireless

but I.I fixed that :D i was wondering

will it be like a big transsition from RC to the final version?

cuz i have the RC and ive noticed a few bugs specially in Pidgin Messenger...

talsemgeest
October 30th, 2008, 12:05 AM
Well, even once they have it on their server the still need to mirror it to the international servers before they link to it on the ubuntu website.

They will release it when it is ready.

If you have the RC version, all you have to do is run the update manager after the release and you will have the same version as everyone else.

rc = release candidate, it's after the beta, before the final release(which if all previous versions are anything to go by will have have .1 version about a month later with a few updates)

Just have them make a page that shows simple text, something tiny, so it's minimal load, I mean which is better:

<html><body>not yet</body></html>and when it's released:

<html><body><a href='/8.10/'>Download already</a></body></html>or the current page.

The smaller pages will really reduce load.

I think it'd be hard to anticipate for what demand on release day will be. I mean, they should expect a large increase in traffic on their server, but it's mainly just the nerds waiting for it. (Not to offend nerds. I am also waiting for it, so I guess I could be counted in the category.)

its almost 4 of clock now and only about 16 hours left Im guessing. Depends actually on who is building the iso, if he's an ex debian developer and is working full time on ubuntu then it will be little bit sooner, like at 14:00-15:30

I am in PST and thought that I'd be able to come home from work at 5pm (0000 hrs UTC) and be ready for a download. When I saw the Update icon I got excited...only to find out it was an apt update....BOO!

They seem to be doing what they did last time. Waiting until it turns the 30th in the last timezone (which essentially means it will be midnight the 31st in New Zealand) before they release. Oh well I'll wake up and start the download and hopefully have it before 4:00pm est
Last time it was almost 1am here in New Zealand before the official release.

I wasn't going to move on to Intrepid, but I just read this on the Ubuntu web site...

BBC Content

Starting the media players within Ubuntu (Totem Movie Player and Rhythmbox) launches a menu of selected content from the broadcaster that is free to air. This is a mixture of video, radio and podcasts and available in high quality, much of it playable using non-proprietary codecs. Content is constantly updated via the corporation's stream and will vary dependent on location, though some content will be available for every user.

That might be enough to convince me. (unless I can put this in Hardy somehow)

I'm one who will be resourceful before asking questions and will soon start feeling out which area I would like to start helping in development/testing, but it's nice to know that there are so many people working together.

I understand why they do that, most of them can be considered hackers(not crackers who go ahead and break things, hackers are the good guys who write code, like to learn things, sure, some break systems, but it's normaly their own systems that they break into in the hopes of testing some new security measure, or something similar), and on of the key points about them is their desire to learn, some people post questions that show no desire to learn as such they get looked down upon, a couple more words in the problem description could solve this, but most people don't bother, not understanding the way the hacker thinks(which is understandable, since most people aren't hackers).
If you ever need to post on such forums here are a few good phrases to use, try not to over use them, and if you can write in full english(without slang and resorting to "i cnt got it work, u help") you'll be able to get responses from those sorts of people far more often:

I am trying to learn
I have tried...
I [did/would have] google searched it but [my search turned up no relevant results/I am unsure how to phrase the search/I couldn't find any solution/...]
I am trying to...
I read the man pages, but [I couldn't find an explanation of this situation/I have a hard time understanding it]Remember, a hacker appreciates a desire to learn, even in people who don't know anything to begin with. And good luck(nothing works 100% in those sorts of communities, but these tips will give you a pretty good chance of getting a reply).

To be honest though, I gave a gutsy CD to my half-brother for X-mas last year, the dude kept telling me he was going to try linux, but he never did, so I got him the gift, along with as much tech support as he needs from me, intrestingly other than him asking me for some help at the start(installing and installing applications for what he needs) he's never asked for my help since...

Save them, in case you ever get your hands on an older machine that the newer versions have either dropped support for or require too much configuration for.

I still have a Feisty alternate CD just in case my Thinkpad's primary Xubuntu install ever tanks, since its soundcard does not work with newer versions of Ubuntu installed cleanly.

Yep, I was reading the thread yesterday that compared Ubuntu speed from Feisty thru Ibex. Feisty was twice as fast at video / audio encoding (I think it was twice as fast. Don't quote me on it.) I might try those distros again as a reminder of the good old days. Keeping them around seems like a sensible thing to do. There are plenty of old computers just begging to be refurbished.

Someone also bought up in another thread that 7.04 Xubuntu alternate was faster than the 8.04 Xubuntu alternate.Don't know about the alternate, but when I upgraded from Xubuntu 7.04 to 7.10, I noticed some slowdown. When I upgraded further from 7.10 to 8.04.1, it got even slower. I'm hoping to $deity that Xubuntu's 8.10 version is faster, since that was one of their stated goals for their 8.10 version.

Keep in mind, the machine I don't dare do clean installs on is an old Thinkpad with only a 300 MHz CPU, so every speed hit is not only noticed, but glaring.

I was kidding. I actually installed the beta about a month ago, just to see if I could get fakeraid working. It didn't play nicely with windows, so I had to put it down :(

So now, with a nice clean partition I am ready to start again!

Wow! That's very nice of you. Unfortunately I can't do that since I have limited bandwidth. Hell I am not sure I could download it today or I have to wait till 17 Nov.(new monthly cycle opens on that date)

I've said this before, and I'll say it again, I'll burn a CD for you if I know where you are and it's not going to cost me too much in postage(and if you live really close I might drop it off in person, since that's so much faster than the mail :P)

(If you've already mentioned what country your in and I've missed/forgotten tell me again, I'm a bit of an idiot for remembering a lot of things :p)

I would do it too, but nzpost can be a bit expensive when it comes to international shipping.

Well, it's nearly Friday (October 31st) in the Christmas Islands. And 24 hours behind is Hawaii. I think in about 40 minutes when it's midnight in Hawaii, it will be released. By that, I mean 10:00AM UTC.

By the way, I don't live in the Christmas Islands. I live in Florida. But check out this page: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/custom.html?sort=2 It's sorted by time zone.

I won't proceed with clean installation. I will first try to upgrade and if somethings goes really wrong I will re-install from scratch. Any case I will be able to have the upgrades downloaded today?
