Aargh, second try. links2 ate a more detailed report.

I was on Gutsy. Started to get random total freezes and "desktop hangs" (2 separate symptoms). "desktop hang" is where load is low, the current window works fine, but everything Gnome is broken. Toolbars let you do 1 or 0 things: sometimes you can press any button but then only that button works for a random period of many seconds, sometimes nothing works. Window frames, similar deal. Starting new apps, similar (sometimes 1 kind of app, sometimes 0, never several), except that it is also really really slow.

Focusing on the freezes, and since my system had plenty of customization, I first tried: updating to hardy, reinstalling hardy, then updating to kernel mumblemumble-21. This last seems to have fixed it, at least long enough for the "desktop hang" symptom to reappear.

(right now I am still stuck in terminal, installing kubuntu-desktop to see if KDE has same problem.)
