Does anyone know what the new instant messenger for 8.10 is supposed to be?

Isn't it the latest Pidgin in ubuntu and Kopete in kubuntu?

I'm not sure... I guess I'll see tomorrow! I was just curious to see if Pidgin actually did some updates. Digsby looks sweet, but the jerks won't release the linux version.

Yes Empathy will be a new instant messenger addition, but you'll need to install it.

What does it mean when it asks you to "add" the protocol services to empathy? Also, it is just me, or does this app look exactly like Pidgin?

After installing empathy you have to install other packages for each protocol, it's a bit confusing. I used empathy for a few months but have gone back to pidgin for now.

When are we going to get a perfect video chat on Linux. When will we be share out desktops to others like in a mac (I saw in their promo video). When linux is said to be operating system for internet. Why don't it still have those features

When someone steps forward to produce these things for nothing.

Care to volunteer? :)

I downloaded Empathy using the Synaptics Package Manager. A very tiny/plain window comes up:

After clicking on the "foot" I get this:

Hmmm... So, where would I get the backends?

The guy askin the question has a point. I hope security updates dont rely on a weekend warrior the way other stuff does :)
That said, im happy with my "Fresh" install of 8.10.. Upgrades are more trouble than they are worth.
Pidgin is fine for me btw..
off topic: only bug i had up my *** was the ugly fonts in ubuntu, then tried the freesans set and ive found the sweet spot.. even in firefox, i dont need to have "lets sites use their own fonts" checked anymore..

The upgrade smoked my system. Everything is all grainy and the video is messed up. PO'ed.

Empathy looks and feels just like Pidgin. I like Pidgin much better myself. Empathy keeps your "Conversations" logged so when you go to chat with someone, your previous conversation is up. So I'll chat with someone 3 weeks later and wonder.. WTF? Was I just talking to you? Kind of a dumb idea. I couldn't figure out how to disable that.
