View Full Version : [ubuntu] 8.10 upgrade. Places menu starts Rhythmbox 0.11.6, doesn't open folder

Places -> computer works fine, as does places->network. But the top six default items in the places menu (Home Folder, Documents, Desktop, Music, Pictures, Video) fail to take me to any folder at all. Instead they make Rhythmbox launch?!? Any thoughts?

I have the same problem. I upgraded last night, and I haven't found an answer yet. Could someone please help?

I had the same problem so I just uninstalled rhythembox since i don't use it anyway and everything worked fine. If you do use it maybe uninstall and then reinstall.

I have a similar problem after upgrading today except Rhythmbox didn't open.... nothing opened.. apart from an error message

Could not open location 'file:///home/ and

No application is registered as handling this file

I'm not too bothered though I'm sure a future update will fix it.

In is not exactly the procedure described in the link, but it did help me fix the problem. You are very kind. In Ubuntu 8.10 you find a folder (such as 'home'), right-click, select 'open with other application', then choose 'open folder.'

Very interesting. I have the same problem, but instead of Rhythmbox, I get Clamtk launching. I tried the workaround from the link to Launchpad, and that did not resolve my issue. I'll continue investigating.

A lot of us have had similar errors and were posting over in thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6067854#post6067854

not sure if it will help but Mikewhatever came up with this solution

Call out Nautilus with alt+f2 --> naulilus, which should open your home folder. Now, right click on any of the folders (Video, Pictures, whatever) goto properties then get to the 'Open with' tab. Check the button next to 'Open Folder', that should be it. In my case, the default application was the Archive Manager, so that it would always come up.

and this has worked for a lot of us

For me it's F-Spot that's launching instead of nautilus. Weird. I'll try any and all of the fixes listed here. Thanks to all.

There is a launchpad bug for this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...us/+bug/260492

In summary, the best fix is to edit ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list removing the offending ?.desktop entries against the inode/directory entry.

e.g. from:

inode/directory=userapp-baobab-OO53FU.desktop;nautilus-folder-handler.desktop;nautilus.desktop;userapp-nautilus-XXZ2JU.desktop;

to:

inode/directory=nautilus-folder-handler.desktop;

There is no need to go through all the places bookmarked changing the "open with" options
