I have a macintosh e3400c. It has 32mb ram and 200mhz cpu. I have tried freebsd, dsl for powerpc, and debian for powerpc, but none will install, or even boot from the cd or floppy. I can't setup a network boot. What shall I do? I might try mac os 9... Give your opinions, and keep me busy ;)

EDIT: I met some lady at a coffee shop and she is getting rid of her eight year-old pc because it's broken. But, when she described it to me, it's all windows related problems. So, I will be installing linux on it. Thanks :)

Why doesn't DSL boot? It should be able to work on that hardware.

That's quite constricted specs you have there.

32MB ram will probably not be enough to run any sort of graphical interface. You will use at least 15-20MB just getting the system running, so I doubt that running X is going to be a very pleasing experience.

Nowadays, most routers or nas boxes sold come with similar specs (see for instance the NSLU2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU2), so if you "need" a box for a role on the network, you might set it up as a router/nas/mail server.

As for which distro, you might want to explore the list at penguinppc.org (http://penguinppc.org/about/distributions.php).
