Grub seemed to not find my windows install for dual booting.

I checked in gparted and fortunatly i did not overwrite it like i had feared it's just sitting there in /dev/sdb1 waiting for me to load it is there a utility that'll re-build my grub file or do i have to add it manually?

I don't know of any good way to automatically configure Grub to add Windows to your boot menu, but that link that Pumalite gave is an excellent place to start to learn how to do it yourself. If you get stuck and need help, then first post:

sudo fdisk -lu
Let me know which drive you are booting from on start up, and we can work from there. :)

If you post "sudo fdisk -lu" it will make it more clear, but if you are booting from your sda drive and Windows is on your sdb drive, you should be able to use the following to boot Windows;

sdb1 is where i keep my windows install sdb2 is where i store games.

OK, since you have 3 drives, you'll have to try two ways of booting Windows, so first open a terminal (applications > accessories > terminal) and do:

gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
And at the bottom add the two following entries:

title Windows XP (hd1)
root (hd1,0)
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader +1

title Windows XP (hd2)
root (hd2,0)
map (hd0) (hd2)
map (hd2) (hd0)
chainloader +1
Save, reboot, and one of them should work to boot Windows. Once you find which one works, you can delete the other one from your menu.lst. Let me know how it goes.

Swatsbiz, I think it would be better for you to start your own thread rather than resurrect this old thread. How about starting your own thread, download the Boot Info Script (https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/) to your Ubuntu desktop, open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and do:

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh
That will create a "RESULTS.txt" file in the same directory from where the script is run, namely your desktop; please copy/paste the contents of the RESULTS.txt file to your next post, highlight the copied text, and click the pound/hash sign # graphic in the Ubuntu forum message box so that the text will get "code" tags put around it. The results of that script will help clarify your setup and hopefully what it will take to boot Vista.
