How can I make my custom (transparent-ish png) background work the whole way along? The GTK/metacity theme is taking over behind the menu, and the notification area and time.

bump there must be a simple solution?
Or even a complex one? How could I change the default panel in the metacity/GTK theme to my own panel, a bit of a hacked solution.

You should adjust the GTK theme colors in the System > Preference > Appaearance : colors tab I think.

No, the panel background I want is a png I found. The other one isn't a solid colour, it's an image.
