I have a strange issue that I can't work out how to solve. When I try to start Gnome it just goes to the "ubuntu-brown" screen (i.e. log-in completes) but then hangs there permanently. No login sounds, no panels appear, and nothing appears to be going one. If I enter failsafe gnome it works correctly, as it does with other environments.

I'm not sure where to go to solve this one as ~/.xsession-errors doesn't give any suggestions. I'd appreciate some pointers!
