password problems

hae am having trouble installing ma softs on ubuntu on command line while using the sudo command in admin mode,when i enter the correct password, i get this message....Authentication failure,pls help

have you set a root password or do you only use "sudo"?

if you have not set a root password and sudo is not working you may need to boot using "init=/bin/bash" and set a root password.
