I have no idea where to go with this subject however the minimum specs would be something like...
AMD processor
1gig of ram
80gbs of memory.
Anyone know anything that has these types of specs?

Closest I could find to what you want, not even sure if it's offered.

I've had a lot of sucess with my HP Compaq 6710b. Only thing is it doesn't have an AMD processor. I would go HP, though, since they're pretty good about Linux compatibility.

I honestly think yhe AMD processor is your biggest holdup.
Although you may want to break the bonds of intel's near monopoly, most good Linux laptops (or at least the pre-installed ones) have an intel processor...
EDIT: oic.

I personally wouldn't worry about the processor as much as the chipset, intel seems to work out of the box. It doesn't appear you're looking for a game machine, so finding a machine that "just works" seems to be the end game here. I have a low end toshiba, & most everything just works, of course YMMV.

Is there any particular reason you want an AMD processor?

Well, I use an IBM T43 which uses an Intel Processor. I haven't really had any problems with it. Everything is fully supported accept the HDAPS system, which really isn't that important.

Neither of them offer AMD.

Yeah. Why AMD 64? Ubuntu works perfectly on Thinkpads, some Dells, and System76 lappies.

It works quite well with my Fujitsu Esprimo U9200. I just had to tweak some sound card settings and I still haven't made the internal mic work on Hardy. Everything else works fine, though.

I just like them better.
But if it's to much hassel I will break my AMD chain.

HP machines with Intel everything work famously. I've never had a problem with the various machines I've tried, particularly from the dv line.

I'm the happy owner of a HP Compaq nc4200, 1,73 Ghz, 1 gig RAM running 7.10 Gutsy like a breeze, not the latest tech but everything worked out of the box, if you don't need compiz and lots of eye candy i can only recomend you this one.

Well the HP you linked to is unavailable, and the Acer does seem like a good deal but there's no guarantee Linux will work (in fact the GMA4500MHD has been reported to have problems (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=928668)).
On the other hand, if you're not on a budget I would consider looking at some of the offerings from System76, ZaReason, or Dell.

HP dv5z.

Does everything work out of the box? 'Cause they have some good deals on HP with this laptop. If wireless works out of the box (I really could care less about anything else) then I will be getting this.

I use ubuntu 8.04LTS on HP520. Compiz was not working when i first installed but after firing the update manager, it works great. It has 1GB Ram and Intel Core Duo processor.
I havent tried the dial up modem in this machine but everything else works out of the box.

Recently upgraded to 8.04 LTS and it works like a charm, even compiz and desktop effect are working now too! :D, feel free to check my blog (http://cyberponcho.blogspot.com/2009/02/ubuntu-on-hp-nc-4200.html) for hardware spec.
