The linux counter is not working right now, but the ubuntu counter gives a good list.

http://ubuntucounter.geekosophical.net/

You can get registered also.

I don't think there is a very accurate number, but since there are like 2 billion computers in the world, and Linux marketshare is anywhere between 0.85%-3%, you can say there are anywhere between 18 million to 60 million Linux desktop users in the world. Of course this doesn't count people who use it on cellphones, in set-top/DVR boxes, etc. that number would be much higher.

I would say around 50 million average taking the population from about 6 to 6.5 billion and market share last I heard was 0.9%, even though that isn't even 1 billion people, its still a lot.

I think out of those 50 million, half of them probably use ubuntu.

Everyone is a Linux user.

Bold statement, I know, but consider that Microsoft relies on a service that uses Linux, web servers run Linux a lot, and many devices have it.

Not using Linux is much harder than not using Windows and Google.

Microsoft recently said that they hold 97% and mac 3%. I immediately thought: 'So where are we ?"

That's simple. MS like to dismiss Linux, because they know it's a bigger threat to them than Mac ever was or ever will be.

Come 9.10 they're in trouble :)

There are three types of lies...

They may be going by "Proprietary operating systems sold on personal computers", instead of "operating systems used".

For servers, netbooks, super computers and others the numbers would be way different.

Indeed. Any real reliable server is either unix, linux or sun systems. Or so I've heard...

Thx that answered my question. anyway, i though we were more than only 60 million, 1% of the pc's, etc it seems a very low rate to me :7

My whole country is 1.3 mill. so 60 seems like quite a bit. i feel good knowing that so many other people just know better.

There are closer to 45 millions now probably.
It was estimated 40 million desktop/laptop users before the netbook rave with ubuntu running almost half of it. Those numbers should be more into the direction of ubuntu having half of the linux desktop users and few more newcomers.

Get real people. Linux has about 1 percent of the PCs.MAC 5 percent, Windows about the rest. Do a Google search though a good spin doctor might make the numbers look a lot different.

I have a website that can monitor the OS of the computers that visit the website. I just checked at 5:14 PM CDT on 26 Oct 2008 and got the following results:

Win XP - 74.34%
Win Vista - 7.5%
Win NT - 4.33%
Win 2000 - 1.06%
UNKNOWN - 2.11%
Linux Unix - 5.28%
MAC OSX - 5.39%

Based on my website, it looks like Linux is in a close race with MAC OSX. The hits on my website have shown an increase in Linux Unix OS over the past year. My website has nothing on it related to Operating Systems; therefore, there is no reason for Linux Unix users to be more inclined to hit it than Windows users. So I guess that would make it 50 million Linux users.

Get real. The question didn't say PC's users. It said "Linux users".

My mistake. I did not know some Linux users do not use PCs. I stand corrected.

So, now you're saying that people who only drink tea aren't "water users"? If I use Linux, then I am a Linux user. If I use water, then I am a water user.

UNKNOWN - 2.11%

Unkown? What would qualify as unknown? Hand held devices?

Well, there are a bunch of OSes that are really low on the market share. Also, not everybody wants to answer polls.

:)Even if all my computers ran Windows, I would still be a Linux User because my router runs Linux.:)
