it's my understanding that automatix is bad for ubuntu, and should be avoided. ubuntu has come a long way in just the year I've been using it. most likely you won't need it any more, between the restricted manager and medibuntu (http://www.medibuntu.org/).

ahh! well heres what i do:

first open a terminal and enter:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

then go to medibuntu at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu , and follow the repository how to. it's easy, just copy and paste into terminal.

that should get you all the codecs you need, but let us know if you have any trouble, and there are numerous tutorials available.

have fun,

I would steer clear of Automatix2 at this point. It's my understanding it's been discontinued, though I'm sure you can still find it out there. Here's a quick wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatix2) on Automatix. As doas777 mentioned, Ubuntu has matured quite a bit in the last year or so. That said, there are a few alternatives: Linux Mint is one example (it's another Ubuntu/Debian-based distro and it may be what you're after).
