I know this has been posted before but this seems to be an individual problem for my computer as none of the other threads seem to have helped.

As the title suggests, my screen resolution is stuck. Specifically at 800 x 600, and manual configuration on my part had me go into safe mode to change the monitor back to something that wasn't stretched to the point of not seeing my mouse.

I'm working on Ubuntu 8.04, my monitor is an Acer X203W (user CD wasn't much help), my graphics card is a GeForce 9800 GT (EVGA edition) and here is my xorg.conf:

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I notice that you are using the vesa driver. it is very limited. I would install an nvidia driver. there are numerous tutorials available from people that know more than I. try this one for starters:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=880787

good luck,
franklin

I have been able to solve this problem, thank you to all that helped.

I will post here to tell others in my shoes what I did to get my resolution back to my preferred 1680 x 1050.

First, I used this thread;

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=880787

Thank you nbayiha, you are a ubuntu guru.

For anyone running a GeForce 9800 GT (like I am) you may run into a problem that won't let you install the NVIDIA drivers that nbayiha told us to download.

What I personally had to do was download the NVIDIA driver to my documents loaction (it doesn't matter where just remember where you put it) and I had to restart my computer and launch recovery mode.

I started the "root Drop to root shell prompt" once I got to the blue and gray screen.

You may want to write this down as you won't be able to see my post (since you are in recovery mode)

Note: Be sure to remember where you put your NVIDIA file, mine was in location: /home/anang/Documents

cd /home/anang/Documents

sudo sh NVIDIA*

sudo telinit 3

Follow the instructions NVIDIA gives you and follow up with the telinit command. Ubuntu should start and your resolution should be at it's highest.

Again, this is the specs of my computer when this problem occurred:

Acer X203W Monitor (notice it's not an option you can choose in the Screens and Graphics program)

NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT Graphics card (notice, Ubuntu cannot recognize this card by default http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/169.12/README/appendix-a.html)

Ubuntu 8.04 with Hardy Hary

Hope this helps others with my problem. :)
