Cards with the ICE1712 chip are fantastic in Linux. Can't beat the m-audio audiophile 2496.

A 'cheap' sound card will not be any better than what you currently have (onboard). Perhaps worse...

This should fit the bill: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/98938

I have one and with Ubuntu 8.04 it was a simple case of fit card, plug in speakers, boot PC and it worked immediately with no user input whatsoever.

I use it with a pair of Gigaworks T20's and the sound is pretty good. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/104071
