SimplyMEPIS was using Kernel 2.6.26 till beta2 and switched to 2.6.27 in beta3. One of the reason cited by MEPIS is "the 2.6.27 kernel will get long term support. (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/10/11/235)"
The current LTS kernel is 2.6.16 which is not used by Ubuntu(Dapper has 2.6.15 and Edgy has 2.6.17).
Good news is Intrepid is going tohave 2.6.27.
