I installed ubuntu ultimate 1.9, with freedesktop.org. It is based of off hardy. I upgraded to 8.10 beta, and I'm getting problems. i uninstalled kde and xfce because i only want gnome. i encounter errors with the brightness applet, power manager, add/remove programs, and changing the themes, among other things. I believe the problem is because i cannot use gnome-settings-daemon. I checked if it was running, ended it, and restarted it. The theme set to the theme i changed it too, but reverted as the process ended two or three seconds later. I also get this error:
"Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager."
when changing my backround or appearance. What is the problem? And how can I fix it? Thank you in advance for your help!
