Thank you guys! Keep'em coming! KDE and other WM users are welcome too, as long as you can display a GUI equivalent of the Gnome System Monitor.

Excellent! There is quite a number of platforms Ubuntu can run on indeed. From Pentium III to quad-core so far is quite extensive!

Desktop. I really should get it dual-booting with AMD64 Intrepid, just so I can use all 4 gigs of RAM. Oh well. I'll find the time as soon as I can.
(By the way, Kevbert, how is Jaunty working for you?)

Looking at your pic, is that four x four quad core processors, or one processor with four cores being reported as four? (State of disbelief if it's the first one.)
Here's mine, an underpowered but very-fast-with-ubuntu laptop

No, it's a single quad-core CPU which is being recognized as four processors. My motherboard only has one socket.
Can you imagine the noise, heat, and power draw issues from a sixteen-processor machine? (unless it was clocked really low.) And for not much gain. Unless you're doing a lot of virtualization, a quad-core isn't going to be much help. Most games only use a single core, but a dual-core is still helpful for gaming (game on one core, background processes on another.)

That's why I was kind of in a state of disbelief if it was 4 * 4 processors...

I don't have System Monitor or any such app installed, but my specs are:
* 1 gig RAM
* AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
* Arch Linux (Slackware on other partition)
* Kernel 2.6.27
* 185 GB free space
Just for the heck of it, I'll add on a shot of my running apps / used memory (which would also be displayed in System Monitor, right?).

See if you can guess the core/processor numbers
Yes, I don't really have enough Ram, but have you seen the price of ECC DDR2? :(

I could do with a bit more, VMs under virtualbox suffer with more demanding apps.

my pentium 4 uses "hyperthreading" which tricks the OS into thinking i have 2 processors.

just go to synaptic and search for "ttf". you'll see a bunch of cool font packages... install a bunch of them and you'll get it.
