Hello all!

I tried to upgrade Ubuntu 6.06 LTS to 8.04 LTS by using the update-manager. The system has been up-to-date before I started the update-procedure.
This did not work that well since several error messages appeared.

After the (incomplete?) update I tried 3 or 4 times to start Ubuntu. I got "fsck died with exit status 8" error messages.
However, these errors disappeared, don't ask me why.

Now the system proceedes until the login screen. After logging-in, it freezes.

Here are the log files from /var/log/dist-upgrade/

In apt.log (all files included in the attached zip file), the errors look like

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any helpful information. There seem to exist similar problems, but I didn't manage to extract the necessary informations to fix my system.

I hope someone is able to give me informations, tipps, instructions on how to fix these problems.

Thanx a lot in advance!
Bye

The upgrade path would be 6.06-->7.04-->7.10-->8.04, you can't directly upgrade to 8.04. Seeing as your system is in an unstable state, it would probably be best to do a clean installation.

If the update is incomplete, you can resume where you left off; boot into "recovery mode" from the GRUB menu, and give the command
dpkg --configure -a (Note, no sudo).

If that fails (gives errors), use (AT YOUR OWN RISK)

dpkg --configure -a --force-all

Actually, he can upgrade LTS to LTS. And 7.04 repositories are now closed, he cannot upgrade to 7.04 (unless he grabs an 7.04 alternate CD, but then he can't upgrade to 7.10 without fully updating it; which cannot be done with closed repositories.)

I'm not shure if the upgrade is complete or incomplete.
GRUB states version 8.04.
Before using "dpkg --configure-all (--force-all)", I guess, I have to change the sources.list file. (hardy->dapper).

If this doesn't work, I will try a clean install.
Things can't get worse...

If it is not too late donīt do that.It looks like you want to downgrade your system. If you allready have Hardy why change source list to Dapper?Try what prshah adviced to you.

Ok, I misunderstood that.

I tried the commands mentioned above.

"dpkg --configure -a --force all" again produced some error messages.

But now, at least, the x-server starts.
Some additional error messages about HAL appear...

I guess, now I have to re-install all the components listed above. But I dont think, this can be done using Synaptic, as it is part of the list.
So first re-installing Synaptic manually? Then, the other components?

Thanks again!

sudo dpkg --configure synaptic

That should work.If you still can not configure other packages with synaptic use same command as above(for other packages) and you should be fine.

You were supposed to do the "dpkg" command from Recovery Mode; looks like you've not booted into recovery mode.

Boot into recovery mode, and repeat the command again.

Because I haven't been shure if I tried the command in recovery mode, I tried again - result is:

So, I have been in recovery mode.
