Pardon my ignorance first of all.

I am a new user to Ubuntu hardy heron version and for the last 2 weeks, I am learning new things everyday.
I have Ubuntu on my Desktop and have 1 laptop (running vista). I need to set up my Desktop as File/Print Server.
I don't know how to determine if my Ubuntu installation is Workstation or Server. How can I find it out and if it is a workstation, is there a way to do networking (they share the connection with the wireless router...desktop hard wired to the router and the laptop wirelessly) so that I can set up a local printer with Desktop and print from laptop through the network. The printer is a local printer and doesn't have an IP address (it is a lexmark e322 which otherwise runs fine locally from Ubuntu).
I don't really want to install Ubuntu again as I have installed too many applications and wouldn't necessarily know how to get them again.
Kindly help.
