Hi all, I am very new to linux, but would like to try it out...

I get to the Ubuntu installation menu, and select "Install Ubuntu"

Well immediately afterwards I get this

ata5.01: exception Emask0x0 SAct 0x0 Serr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
ata5.01: cmd a0|00:00:00:24:00|00:00:00:00:00/b0 tag 0po36
ata5.01: status: {DRDY}
Buffer I/0 error on device fdo, logical block

this error repeats over and over and over..

what am i suppose to do?

I custom built my pc..

Sounds like you have a problem with your floppy drive but I don't see why this would be a showstopper. Try disabling the floppy from boot order in bios and make sure that the cdrom is before the hard drive in boot order
