Installed Ubuntu first time, how to get to desktop?

I just installed Ubuntu desktop alternate by burning the iso to a CD. I used the thing where my entire HD would be deleted and Ubuntu installed. Anyways I run my PC and I get a black screen. I login using the name and password I picked during installation, this works. But now I'm sitting at a screen like:

jacob@user:`$

I just want to get to the regular graphical desktop.

Also once this problem is solved is it possible to change the name (the user part) I thought it was asking me for my network name not a login name thing.

try typing
startxalthough, to be honest it should start up automaticly, so I'm not sure why it's not for you.
