Is Linus rich? I was just wondering if all his hard work paid off monetarily. I had always wondered this and decided to ask.

Red Hat and VA Linux, both leading developers of Linux-based software, presented Torvalds with stock options in gratitude for his creation.[8] In 1999, both companies went public and Torvalds' net worth shot up to roughly $20 million.[9][10]

Yes.

He is both.

He is working for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Foundation and lectures (he sells out when he lectures) and the stock mentioned above.

Can I add that when he first recived the stock options there were worth a fairly small amount, I think VAlinux went up 600 or 700% on it's first day, and redhat didn't do badly either, I think it went from something like 5 to 35 points after the first day and rose at a pretty constant rate for a while(splitting 2 or 3 times), he was never exactly intrested in getting rich, he recived shares as a part of his contracts(or gifts, since I don't think he ever worked for VA), it's just that linux is so valuble that their price sky-rocketed like it did.
