I recently applied the latest recommended security updates (including kernel) to 8.04. Since then, the administrative id works fine. All other users (even a new one created after the problem began) freeze up when either panel is clicked on.
I tried booting with the older kernel that had always worked fine and that produced the same results.
Ubuntu Studio 8.04 (gnome)
Any ideas?

P.S. It sounds like the hard drive is in constant use which might explain the "hang". I can use CTRL-ALT-F2 and shutdown -r successfully, but shutdown -H fails.
