I'm seriously annoyed. Here's what my monitor looks like when Ubuntu first loads:

It's gigantic! The user name and password fields aren't even visible. Fortunately, I can log in if I just type my name, then Tab, then my password. However, it would really be nice to actually be able to see the fields. Once I'm logged in, the screen resolution is fine.

It just started doing this. When I first installed Ubuntu 8.04, I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get the screen res to work right with my NVIDIA graphics card. The login screen somehow ended up a bit off center, but at least the fields were visible.

Recently when I was downloading a couple of large torrents, Ubuntu got really sluggish, so much so that I could not control the PC and had to hard reboot. When the OS came back up again, I was stuck back at the 800x600 res that Ubuntu originally was stuck at when I first installed it. At this point, the opening login screen was big, but the fields were visible. Per my notes from the previous time I had screen res probs, I troubleshooted the NVIDIA card and driver and got the res back to where I wanted it. (It included uninstalling and reinstalling NVIDIA drivers and running Envy.)

I got the screen res back where it should be on my Ubuntu desktop, but the login screen is gigantic as you can see in the picture. How do I fix this?

Is this (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/216871/comments/16) a solution for you?:
