error message

Hi I'm pretty new to anything but windows and am encountering some problems with updates in ubuntu 7.10.

Whenever I try to install updates with synaptic package manager, or run update manager I get the following error message:

"E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

Has anyone got any idea what this means and how to solve the problem?

Do in terminal
sudo dpkg --configure -a
