I'm running GNOME on my PC but I originally installed Xubuntu/Kubuntu. (I just downloaded the GNOME stuff from the repos). Now it runs fine, but all of the programs are KDE programs and I was just wondering why.

Also, I installed the Mythbuntu setup on my other laptop (which was installed as just regular Ubuntu with GNOME), and when I login and shutdown it has a mythbuntu splash/login screen, why is this?

None of these things mess up the functionality, I'm just curious.

When you install the ubuntu-desktop package, it just adds programs; gnome, gedit, etc. Since nothing conflicts, the package manager will not remove your old programs.
