I've just had an extremely disturbing experience courtesy of Cinelerra.
I attempted to install Cinelerra-CV from their website, where they kindly offer an Ubuntu repo. I added said repo, updated and installed Cinelerra (in a terminal window). A Debconf window then popped up informing me that "Akirad News" had been installed and would I like to donate money to him?
I attempted to remove the package, but Cinelerra had a hard dependancy on it! It also had installed startup simlinks for all runlevels.

It's a sad day for linux.

Huh, well that takes that app off the trusted list.

I don't mind cos Cinelerra crashes every minute or two anyway...
I grabbed LiVES instead, though getdeb is down so I went directly to one of their mirrors.
Still, it's a bit weird is all. It was like WinRAR all over again.

i dont see a forum... thats usually the first thing i look for and browse before installing anything on my computer.

the 'mailing list archive' links seem to be bad, too.

lack of transparency = fail.

* We say farewell to the SVN repo that served us so well. The Cinelerra CV code is now maintained in git.

sooo think this could have started when they changed repositories? perhaps a repository not so well trusted....

Cinelerra needs a good kick in the rear and a long talk about getting with the program. Cinelerra is great if you get past the blemishes: The problem you described, the horrible interface, the poor icons. Kill the news deb, write up a brand new GTK or QT interface, slap on some Tango-styled icons, and Cinelerra could do a lot better. Like that'll ever happen...

Well, to be fair, stability aside it is the best of the bunch.
LiVES can't do proper titles.
Kino is crashy and has a nasty UI.
Pitivi won't even load half the time.
Avidemux is awesome but won't layer over audio or text.

I can't believe I'm harking back to the Pinnacle Studio days!

For cinelerra I just DLed the .tar.gz, unpacked it and launch it from the folder.

Seems easy to me.

I didn't feel the need to install it because I don't edit video that much. Like I said, I just run it from the folder.

I will move it to my desktop, though. I has many screens that would do better on a dual or triple monitor system so you can spread the work out over many screens.

Ahh, I see where you got the binary from.
There's two versions, the CV one and the original upstream one.
I had the CV one (cinelerra.org). You can get binarys from the other one

This has nothing to do with Linux, but software that one chooses to install.

How does LiVes stack up compared to say kdenlive?

svn and git have nothing to do with this. the repository for ubuntu is different.
