Right click on the audio volume control icon and click Preferences. As you can see, it is highlighted on Master. Click on PCM and click Close. The 2.6.24-21 kernel completely ignores the Master volume. Editing the PCM should solve your problem. That's what worked for me. Now I can easily adjust my volume.

If you do not have the volume control applet on your toolbar, you can add it by right-clicking on the panel you wish to add it on and click Add to panel... Scroll all the way to the bottom of the list. It should be around the 5th to last on the list. :guitar:
