I have DSL through AT&T with a 1000HW router/modem. Normally I have the wireless turned off so I was not concerned the router was 802.11b with WEP. But as they say things change.

I just got my foster son a Netflix player. It can use either 802.11b or 802.11g. His room is at the opposite end of the house from my office where the router is. The house is about 1400 sq ft.

Between the router using WEP and the fact that sometimes he can watch movies and sometimes he can't I would like to upgrade the router.

Since the 1000HW still works I figured I would turn the wireless off use it as a modem and hookup the new router to the hub.

Requirements I see for the wireless router
Works with Ubuntu
Works with Netflix player
Works with the 1000H eee with Ubuntu
If possible get enough range to avoid getting a wireless repeater but compatible with a reaper in case I need one.

Any suggestions for a wireless router?

Thanks in advance.

I haven't had any problems with my WRT54G2, I got it at best buy for $60+tax if I remember correctly. It works with Ubuntu and everything just fine. If you need a repeater, you can get one of these (a WRE54G) (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/Search.do?c=1&searchType=user&keyword=wrt54g&searchSection=All&go.x=0&go.y=0), which is compatible with it even though it says it isn't. Only problem is the extender costs an arm and a leg. I got both hooked up and they work just fine together.

WRT54GL

It's WRT54G with Linux on it. Totally hackable, tons of custom firmware. You can even turn it into a repeater or client itself with the right firmware. You can adjust the TX power, overclock/underclock it, and do tons of cool stuff.

With the right firmware the WRT54GL far exceeds it's $60 pricetag.

With DD-WRT:

Asus: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320030

Linksys: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190

Asus has more memory than the linksys does. Your choice

Also, with the Asus, you can plug in a USB drive and use it as a storage mechanism to operate DD-WRT's built in package-manager, if I'm not mistaken.

With the WRT54GL, you don't have much spare memory for a JFFS2 filesystem (~500kb with a 'mini' release of dd-wrt), unless you mod it anyway.

Having a USB drive on your router is cool if you want to do things like plug in a USB sound card and connect up your stereo so you stream music wirelessly from your laptop / desktop to your stereo.

And, as said above it is not bad for attaching an external hard drive and using it for storage, downloading of torrents without your computer needing to be on etc.

I have an old WL500g (which has a USB port) and it works a treat for the above.

Some of the newer ASUS routers come with USB ports, not sure about many of the others though.
