I think I messed up things more than a bit, I was installing some python tools I needed for scientific computation so I compiled several packages (freetype, matplotlib, scipy...) everything seemed fine but after today's system update I had missed the panels, ALT+F2 not working...

I tried un-installing and re-installing gnome panel and desktop several times.

After all this the panels are still not working and I get the following message:

symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2: undefined symbol: FT_Library_SetLcdFilter

I did not dare to un-install cairo 'cause it has too many dependencies but I tried to re-install it and nothing.

any ideas?
