View Full Version : Linux finally a threat to Microsoft

You know that Microsoft see's you as a threat to their business when they begin to copy you. Publically, they'll deny that you even exist. Ask a die hard Mac user.

So, it should come as no surprise that Microsoft has released an installer much like the Ubuntu installer (Source: http://www.microsoft.com/web/channel/products/WebApplicationInstaller.aspx) that will distribute an open-source product called Drupal (source: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-10067547-16.html?tag=newsEditorsPicksArea.0). Beyond that it's finally offering support for Linux users with Silverlight 2.0.

Could it be that they're finally beginning to lose customers to Linux? (See Amazon top 20 laptops)

I believe that it was Steven Ballmore who said that "Linux owes Microsoft". Hmm, well, You're welcome Steven.

I had a look at that and it seems to be mostly XP and Macbooks in the top 10. Not much evidence of the "Pacman-like" nature of Linux.

I'd be more interested in seeing the shipping figures for Dell's Ubuntu machines.

It was only a matter of time before they created something similar to the famous linux repository model.

It is a server application however.

I don't think the desktop using crowd will be interested or ready for the change (some will, most won't).

Bombastic conclusions out of thin air. The Russian thing is, in fact, a threat.

Microsoft has felt threatened by linux and Free software for quite some time now. Hence the Halloween Documents of 1998, Microsoft's open source department, and their "interoperability" pacts with Novell, Xandros etc.

If I remember right, The Linux Action Show, was talking about china doing something like this. Because they don't trust MS, and don't want to be spied on.

Actually the link about Russia and Russian schools is a follow up of sorts to a initial report dating back to September 2007. It is great to see a what progress was made since the initial story.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Russian-Linux-Will-Be-Installed-In-Every-School-66072.shtml

The ALTLinux company has already announced its desire to put in a bid for the tender to develop alternative software. Alexey Smirnov, Director General at ALTLinux, considers that the developers should just adjust the given operating system to school conditions. In this way, the work will be finished by the end of this year and the testing will be done in 2008, launching it into mass production in 2009.

Yes, hopefully we will see similar phenomenons in other countries also. I'm just a bit concerned about the "OS for communists" brand, although that labeling should be getting a bit old by now... I mean, come on... :D

I think that there is a far greater likelyhood of Free OSS taking over the world than Communism.

Though they could go hand in hand. :-D

Well, Microsoft is actually being heavily attacked on all fronts right now by a ton of big cooperations, organizations, and communities. There is Google, Yahoo, Adobe, Mozilla, Apple, Opera Software, etc on the web front; Apple, Dell (starting to), Linux, and Asus are attacking on the desktop front; and Google, OpenOffice.org, and other big software attacking them on that front. Since Microsoft is such a big company, they are starting to be hit hard, and will (probably) fall even harder once they lose on any one of these fronts.

Everyone's shares in the U.S. are going down. Unfortunately there isn't much confidence in the stock market at the moment, and DOW+NASDAQ have been dropping a lot.

I agree. One is a form of how government functions, one is an idea of how source code should be distributed.

Besides, Stallman's not a communist anyway since the idea of opposing software patents and copyrights means less government control. If anything, the Linux ideaology follows a more libertarian path (since it gives "freedom" to the programmer), but that can be debated.

And now I've probably closed this thread for everybody. :)

Correct and while MSFT still has a ton of money, the net effect will be those in charge will have to answer to the stockholders and investors who might ask what to do to improve the bottom line.

One possible side effect that their free promotional giveaways or special discounts could be cut back to protect the bottom line. This could in turn help our side. I'm not bashing, just making a rational observation.

However what MSFT really has to fear, is government mandates for open source. According to recent news articles, this is already happening in Russia, China, Brazil and even the head of the E.U. came out in favor of open source.

spawn.

I think the biggest threat to MS is google

I second that. MS is probably reaching out to Linux Users because they need whatever they can get to catch up to Google. What if Google came out with an open source system and a couple proprietary-based, bundled software? With their user base, psh, MS has a lot to worry about. Even if Google charged a price for an OS, it would be cheaper than what MS has offered in the past. Who knows...

Good news: Russia is going Open Source
Bad news: Russia did pirate a lot of software...

Good news: Russia can cut down costs
Bad news: 1. They didn't pay for it in the first place 2. They avoid lawsuit costs?

Good news: Russia can stop paying it's biggest rival, the US
Bad news: Russia still thinks they are our (US) biggest rival

Good news: Russia thinks the US is a threat
Bad news: Russia thinks we see them as a threat

Neutron bombs are pretty much sheer genius. As long as you don't actually get too close to the site of the blast, the amount of fallout is quite small. And even the blast site is clean in very little time.

Well worth the price if you ask me. ;-)

Tape is magnetic media that could possibly be erased/corrupted by EMP CD and DVD would not, however the integrated circuits inside all these devices as well as the silicon chips would almost certainly be rendered inoperable.

seems to me advertising budgets are one of the first things to get cut when companies are short of cash, this, and also ongoing expenses such as SaaS would be. when money becomes tight, companies are going to look for less expensive alternatives.
