I just upgraded to "Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-21-generic" from "Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic".

After the reboot, I got a message saying that ubuntu was in low graphics mode.

So I press CTRL ALT F1 and logged in to take a look at xorg.conf. It had been changed to this:

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
# values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
#
# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
# For example:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I noticed that it had backup up my previous version to xorg.conf.1 so I restored my version and rebooted.

Here is my version. (I had to customize it so that my laptop could have a different resolution on the external monitor vs. the laptop screen.)

Is there an error in xorg.conf that is causing a conflict with "Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-21-generic"?

Thanks in advance!

My laptop is a Dell XPS M1330 with these specs:
RAM: 4GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2dimm
Video Card: 128 MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2Ghz/800MHz FSB, 4M L2 Cache)

I should also note: when I choose "Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic" in GRUB, it boots just fine.

At this time it is wise to avoid the -21 kernel.

Some of us are having issues with graphics and sound with this kernel release.

I certainly someone would get to the bottom of this.

A cold reboot fixed it for me:

Thanks for the quick reply. I will continue to boot -19 for a while.

This was listed in the recommended updates, so that makes me ask two questions:
1. Did I enable a repository I shouldn't have? I don't want anything unstable or experimental coming from my repositories. (I'll compile from source for the few things that I need the last and greatest versions)
2. Will I receive an update notification when -21 is more stable?

Thanks!

I thought the same thing. I don't have any repos turned on that would install experimental software.

I hope so. This what I am hoping they will do, anyway.

After the upgrade I had to reinstall my video drivers and reinstall virtualbox fro them to work properly

I have since upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-22-generic and I still get the same symptoms. I still have to boot Ubuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-19-generic in order to get my system to work nicely.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
