So here's the deal. I've got an old laptop with a broken backlight, so I can't see anything on the screen. Still works great with an external monitor but I can't use the function keys to switch to an external until windows starts up and I don't know the BIOS on the system well enough to set boot order properly. When I tried the live CD with the "help me boot from CD" it didn't work. Does anyone have any ideas? Or do I need to try to stumble through BIOS in the dark (literally)?

Maybe you could try using the wubi (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#How%20do%20I%20install%20on%20a%20machin e%20with%20no%20internet%20connection?) installer to install ubuntu inside windows, or try using unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) which does not require the use of the cdrom.
