Are there any girls that use Linux? Most girls I've met only know the basics of computers, and they have no clue what Linux is. I figure there must be at least a few out there, but I've yet to find one.

An openSUSE user? No wonder she's an 'ex'.. kidding :) I've known a few female Linux users. I gave my sisters a computer with Ubuntu at one point and one of my sisters actually was installing packages without even asking me about it and called me when she couldn't figure out how to launch RealPlayer.

Please don't be sexist there is defiantly more than one girl in the world who uses Linux.
Ask LaRoza.

My 14 year old daughter is a hardcore Linux user. When I was assembling the computer I planned to give to her, I asked her if she wanted windows, dual-boot or Ubuntu only, and she immediately replied that she only wanted Ubuntu installed.
She's no Linux Guru, but she knows how to use the Synaptic Package Manager and regularly executes commands from the command line.
She spent the whole afternoon with me at the 2008 Ohio Linux Fest and actually enjoyed it...
Given the choice, she chooses Linux over windows. I think that qualifies her as a Female Linux User.

Yep, my wife is a Linux User!
She doesn't know a thing about computers, but she knows that using Ubuntu (Linux) is a lot easier than "you-know-what"...
She's even trying to convert our friends who have problems with their computer. Guess who has the job of doing the switching after that :)
Have a nice day!

Yes, I'm one. I've been using Ubuntu for 15 months now, of which only 2 were dual booting with Windows. I don't know personally any Linux techy types, so I do all my own tech support (with the help of these wonderful forums, of course). I also do a bit of telephone tech support for my son.
Maybe you could count his fiancée as one as well, though she's not particularly geeky. My son does the setting up for her - and trashes things on occasions. Then I have to help him out. :)

Not knowing about Linux has nothing to do with being female. Most people have no clue what Linux is no matter their gender. Even when there are women around many simply don't speak up to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

This is true. I wasn't trying to be sexist in any way, I just wanted to see if the stereotype was true, which, I'm happy to hear, is not.

Well, it is usually just a breeding ground for asking for dates and such. We have to call Joanna often.

Yes, but they wouldn't be interested in you. Stick to your usual type, women with little wispy beards and carry purses full of string.

it wasnt the question that came across as sexist but more the commend "Most girls I've met only know the basics of computers, and they have no clue what Linux is", which whilst probably true (most people i know in general only know the basics of computers and have no clue what linux is), has an air of condescension and sexism about it.
most black people i know dont know anything about computers or linux. is there such thing as a black linux user? ;)

Seriously?
The short answer: yes.
The unabridged version: I'm a woman (or female, as you put it), and honestly it never occurred to me that Linux distros would be more appealing to men than women. My boyfriend made an Ubuntu liveCD for me in January of this year to try on my new Vaio. I installed it per his insistence (note: he sure made it sound as though he knew what he was talking about... I should have known better. He had no knowledge of working with Linux whatsoever. I was stranded! It turned out he just wanted to commission my *new* computer as his Linux guinea pig!). Anyway, these days the tables have turned in this house. I stuck it out with Linux, purged Windows from all my machines, learned how to work from the terminal, and now I'm the one he turns to when his precious computer mystifies him. Hehe.

Ohio Linux Fest 2008...where three of us speakers were girls. Those'd be me, Esther, and Elizabeth Garbee. Of course, there's no way my talk could've been any good, since obviously girls are so bad with computers I couldn't have known what I was talking about when I wrote up my slides on Linux laptop security.

wow...that sounds almost exactly like me. I just got a Vaio laptop in June and by the time September rolled around i was so sick of windows that i had my boyfriend put ubuntu on my computer for me. But he is an AVID linux user. He has been using linux since red hat and is currently using arch. I am still trying to learn the terminal things, but i hope to be as good as my boyfriend someday.

My wife uses my ubuntu box. and uses open office for school. However she does not want to know any of the underlying stuff. She just uses it as a desktop. She has seen me use it since we met in 2003. Back then it was debian with elightenment2 then kde then gnome. She thinks its much more usable now and she is ok with using it since her windows PC died.

yea my girlfriend is similar. she likes the idea of opensource and is annoyed that the university library where she works wont adopt the FOSS koha (www.koha.org) and instead keeps plodding along with an archaic bespoke application system that thats too expensive to replace or update, however she isn't interested in getting down with the commandline or compiling stuff and whatnot. she only uses her ubuntu computer to watch videos, play music and browse the net, much like most people.

My sister uses Ubuntu just like any normal users would (browsing web, listening to music, watching videos and writing poems).
She's not savvy when it comes to computers but she gets startled by people that say anything bad about linux because of their ignorance.
The best thing ever was at a party when some model looking girl said she was getting bds because of the cute mascot and was going to have pink theme :)
There might be way bigger portion of linux users that are of different gender than OP would suggest.

Behold, I was asked to install Ubuntu on a girls laptop. Wish me luck! If I don't come back, tell Linus I love him.
Anyway, it's not that Linux distros are more appealing to males. Computers is just one of those things the guys are more into, than the girls are. Like little boys playing with trucks and girls playing with dolls. These are stereotypes of course, but still they are somewhat true. It's a guys thing I guess.
Kudos to girls who break the stereotypes. :)

My wife is a Linux user, she doesn't care what she uses as long as she gets tabbed browsing and no viruses.
My mom was a Linux for 2 years when she used Ubuntu Dapper, sadly I thought it was a good idea to update it to Hardy last time I was there. About a month ago it crashed and since she lives 7966 kilometers (or 4950 miles) away I couldn't help much, she had to call a repair guy who installed XP for her.

My girlfriend refuses to touch ubuntu, so I'm often stuck fixing her messes, like when she installs Sims2 and directx discovers it is missing a dll...and because it has the latest version, and you can't downgrade it, or remove it, or replace it with something that actually does the job properly.
She says "I don't understand why you put up with the console when windows menus are so much easier" ](*,)
She says the cube is pretty though...maybe that makes her a Linux spectator?

At Ohio LinuxFest this past weekend, one of the talks was "Open Source from a Teenage Perspective" given by a 16-year-old girl. She was rather proud of the fact that she installed Debian on her computer practically by herself when she was 9 (she just had some questions on the partitioning).
There is also a woman who goes to my church who is Red Hat certified and co-wrote a book on Linux System Administration a few years ago.
