How's Freetype doing nowadays with Ubuntu?

I remember there was some sort of patent troubles with Freetype. Does Ubuntu use the patented-and-good-looking or the patent-free-but-not-that-good-looking version of the library?

Just curious. These default fonts look good, but M$ ones not so good.
