i'm 41 and have taken a couple of programming classes (java and javascript) and it turns out i'm ok at it. i saw this site: http://github.com/ mentioned on reddit but i think that's way beyond me. does any one know of a site or a group that has small, mildly intimidating projects for noobs to help out on? i like this stuff very much and want to learn as much as i can.
thanks,
rich

wiki in my sig has plenty of links to training tasks, most you can solve in any language.

Why not check out Ubuntu's idea pool and see if you can write an script or two to help out? Some of the things people ask for are fairly trivial, like ISO mounters or sound/movie/image converters (sounds and movies can be converted using mplayer and images can be converted using ImageMagick;you only need to provide an easy to use interface).

Good. Keep going with Python.

If you know a bit of Java I think you may find this free ebook helpful. (not for new coders)
