im looking to make my own distro, with custom package list and everything, its going to become a cross of ubuntu studio, and muslim edition. i want to install all the packages myself though, so i want a clean base, what distro should i use, debian, or a version of ubuntu?

I'd say Intrepid Ibex so you have the latest Kernel.

You might want to use the latest Ubuntu (especially since it is LTS).
Check the stickies in the Other OS Talk for resources on making custom distros.
