usb thub drive does not boot

I am having diffculty getting my usb drive to boot. I have installed grub which shows

GRUB _

and then hangs. I have installed LILO which shows

_

and then hangs.

I have tried booting the usb drive on three computers and they all refuse to boot from the usb thumb drive.

Ideas?
