Installation on HP Omnibook 7150

I've been trying to install Ubuntu on an old HP Omnibook 7150 in the hope of giving it a new lease of life. I have an installation CD that I've used before and have checked using the check disk utility but when I try to install Ubuntu it gets part way through and then hangs. It sounds like it's trying to read the CD but nothing happens. The Ubuntu background comes up on the screen but no messages appear. Any idea as to what could be going wrong? BTW I left it for about 4 hours before turning it off!

Looking at the default specs, 64mb of ram will not be enough to use ubuntu (requires 384mb) You might want to look at something like dsl (darn small linux) (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/)or maybe a ubuntu minimal install (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems)

After 20 years supporting software I should have thought of that :( The machine actually has 192MB of ram so I was going to try Xubuntu as it looks like it will run in that much memory. I only want it for my daughter to surf the web and write the odd document so I'm hoping that it will do. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks Andy

I downloaded the alternate CD image and burned it to a CD+R but still no luck. The issue now seems to be that the hardware does not support CD+R because during installation many files are reported as being corrupt where if I check the CD on a later machine no errors are found. Is there a way of installing Xubuntu from a USB device?

In the end I installed a different CD drive from an old Dell and it worked fine.
