View Full Version : [ubuntu] Copying files seems to take precedence over everything else

For some reason, whenever I copy large amounts of files (Talking 25gb+ here), my machine slows down to a crawl.

Launching firefox takes about a minute, and once I'm in firefox, it repeatedly grays out (the "application is busy" gray) and it's really hard to do anything with it. Terminal also takes a minute to load.

Is the kernel failing at managing processes, or is there something seriously wrong with my machine? Windows doesn't do this, and it seems to happen whenever I copy large files. In this case it was from ext3 -> NTFS, but the other way around is also slow, and copying from ext3 to ext3 yields similar results.
