I currently have a MythTV box setup and running at home but due to my job (Royal Navy) i'm rarely there to use it. The system is nothing special but can hold it's own so it feels like a bit of a waste to have it sat there doing nothing. The sytem specs are:

Intel Pentium 4 650 3.4Ghz Socket 775 800mhz 2mb Cache
Seagate 7200.10 320GB SATAII/300 8.5ms 7200RPM 16MB Cache
Asus Nvidia 7300GS 256MB PCI-E
1GB DDR2 533MHz PC2-4200 240pin
NEC AD-5170A-0B 18xDVD±RW DL
MSI 945P Neo3-F i945P Socket 775 SATA 8-channel audio ATX
2 x Hauppauge WinTV-Nova-t PCI Freeview Receiver

I already run two Debian servers (File and FTP/Web) on some old Pentium III 700/800MHz and they do the job just fine running as headless command line boxes. This makes it seem a waste to have this 'spare' system running as a server.

Has anybody got any good ideas for the use of this sytem? Any ideas would appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Those are not bad specs, I would just sell it to someone at a decent price and turn it into a home computer.
If you know someone who doesnt know linux maybe you can pop XP on it, or just configure your linux system so that its media ready and the like

Replace the server with the higher load with this spare machine. Then spice up that old server with some bigger HDDs (and a RAID controller if you want) and use it as backup server.
Or, if you want, use that machine as test box for new version, even alpha/beta if you want, or to check out other distros.

Cheers.

I like the idea of using it to test some other distros. Maybe I will give that a try.

Any other ideas?

Cheers.

If the pc is always left powered on, perhaps use it to run those distributed programs, e.g. folding @ home, seti, or similar.

I have changed my old server (with 350W source) by a small laptop (60W), because electricity bills are increasing lately.

I won't use my old server anymore, only if the laptop breaks or something.

If you don't have any real use for it, just don't power it and give the world your $0.1. This is only my advice.

It's funny you should mention that. My laptop's screen died a few months back so I bought I new laptop and will be using the old laptop to replace my FTP/Web server.

My server already runs Folding@Home so I could add to the data I get through. It would be nice to find a new project that I can use it for. Maybe iFolder is worth a look......
