From Linux.com:

Reader Christian Nielsen wrote from Sweden to tell us he and his girlfriend have named their baby Linux, after the operating system, and attached this darling photo.

Nielsen says he and his girlfriend Veronica considered a few names during the pregnancy, "but when he finally arrived none of them seemed right. We both thought that he looked like a little Linux as soon as we saw him and decided to go for that name."

... they could have just gone with Linus...

edit: LOL -

This raises so many questions. Will Richard Stallman insist that the baby be called GNU/Linux? Does a baby named Linux go to sleep and wake up without problems? How often does he outgrow his footwear and require a reboot?

Uhm, ok?
Well, I guess it is a pretty cool name to give to a baby.

NO NO NO NO NO NO!

That's as bad giving a child the suffix 2.0 instead of Jr.!

so the couple is distributing a modified binary that isn't open source? Isn't this a GPL violation? Show me the code!

If I were him, I'd be hoping Linux would die and never be heard from again. It's like being called Windows, if Linux was to take off.

That is true (possibly). I wonder for their next child if they will call it "BSD"?

Really?

I would say that.

Just joking around with people I know. (Unless you are counting the Dell 910 thread, then it is just excitement)

Don't give them any ideas. They'll call their child "Beastie" the BSD daemon.

I'm wondering if the parents are going to allow everyone to extract DNA samples from the baby so that they can modify it and create a new baby.

I can see it now:

I'm going to name my babies Debra and Ian, after Debian. You get it? Deb-Ian. I bet no-one had thought of THAT before!

The question is, how will Linux name his kids?
The twins Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Their beautiful sisters Fedora and Suse. The nerdy Debian. The skinny Gentoo that raised himself.

the only one that sounds reasonable for a name is perhaps solaris. but then that has scifi connotations too so your daughter would attract two types of nerds whilst growing up instead of just one.

I wouldn't do that to my kid (if I ever will have any).

For me this is the same like calling your child "Moonlight or Rain", it's just stupid.

Poor person...

I know in some countries you can't name your child after a brand, a company, or something similar. Sweden is obviously not one of them.

Or of course the Vista baby will crash in the middle of anything and she will have a BSOD and have to be hard reset

I'm afraid that's a horrible idea. Why not name the baby 'Linus' in honor of the kernel's author, and not after the kernel itself? ](*,)

Silly Swedes...

It's a cool name IMO. They might have to have it cleared with the trademark office or something though.

Actually, since the U.S. law states you can't trademark a name, wouldn't the trademark be nulled?

It won't be a cool name once everyone finds out what geeky OS it's associated with

Really? I think being called Linux would be awesome, geeky OS or not.
I think the only problem will come from teachers who can't pronounce your name.

I think that's terrible for the kid, I mean linus would be fine, why go to the nutty side and go for linux?

On the other hand I think it's cool for kids to be named whatever the parents like, I just don't think his parents thought it through enough.
