I am an Ubuntu newbie/rookie and trying to install Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop and having no luck.
I an using the alternate CD and have verified that it is good with MD5SUM.
I previously had 7.04 installed and all worked great. Then when I tried to upgrade to 8.04 all went down the tubes. After the upgrade or an attempted install, I just get a black screen (after the upgrade failed, I burned the 8.04 alt CD and tried to install from scratch with no luck).
The laptop has an XGI Volari video card and I have read that loading the Trident drivers will fix the problem. But, my issue is how can I get to a command prompt to fix this or modify the /etc/X11/xorg.conf when the screen goes black and I can do nothing without doing a power cycle?
Please reply if you have any ideas as I do not know what to do.
Thank you
