Vim Color schemes dont apply

Hi,

I just installed vim 7.1 on my ubuntu 8.04.

I've made put desert.vim im ~/.vim/colors/ and added the following line to my .vimrc file:

colorscheme desert

However, the color scheme does not apply. When I turn syn on though, I do see some colors, but I can't seem to get the color scheme to work.

Can someone please help me out?
