Even though Canonical don't directly benefit financially from this, I'm sure that they will be very happy to add the wiki's use of their server OS to their promotional portfolio for future use to aid in influencing potential new customers to use their server OS.

Good news. :)

Arr, shouldn't it say "Long Term Support" instead of "Long Term Service", or have I lived in disbelief all these years?

Interesting.

It says the move will take a couple of years (which is pretty fast, for an OS change).

The forums here run on measily servers with Ubuntu (not sure which version) and they perform very well. (For those who think the forum's are down too much, consider that an admins is a member flashlight forum (a forum for flashlight collectors) that has better hardware than this forum...)

Very happy with this good news. Good choice by Wikipedia. It's also the desktop of choice for me. :)

On what hardware exactly is this forum run? And where are the servers located?

I presume Canonical pays for it?

Wikipedia is ditching out a mix of Red Hat and Fedora for Ubuntu Linux. Wikipedia has 10 million articles in 250 languages and it is one of the 10 most visited websites in the world.

One of the reasons for this switch was that they did not want to pay Red Hat for support on their provided software solutions. Ubuntu Linux get updated frequently and nothing can beat apt package manger.:lolflag:
